  3. Freedom: A History of US

    January 12, 2018 - March 11, 2018

    The evolving concept of freedom and its pursuit is explored in this touring exhibit from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, illuminating critical figures and events from our nation’s birth until 1968. Highlights include: reproductions of a rare 1776 printing of the Declaration of Independence, a secretly printed draft and official copy of the U.S. Constitution, Lincoln’s handwritten speech notes, and letters by Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, and Martin Luther King, Jr. The exhibit is supplemented with Elmhurst materials including a 1924 KKK rally flyer, manuscripts related to the Elmhurst Fair Housing Ordinance, and correspondence from veterans from the Civil War and WWI eras.

  4. Free Family Open Swims

  8. Spring Art Exhibition Features Printmaker Michael Barnes

    Michael Barnes is a master printmaker with a passion for the medium of lithography. The theme of his work addresses, in part, the absurdities of life and calls into question the historical evolution of so-called civilization. Elmhurst College will host Barnes’ exhibition Many Turns and Feats to Bewilder from January 29 through March 17 in the Frick Center, Founders Lounge. A public reception for the artist will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14. Admission is free to the exhibition and reception, and the public is invited. As a social critic, Barnes is part of a long tradition of visual artists whose works provide a critique of society. A professor of printmaking at Northern Illinois University, he has exhibited his work worldwide. In addition, the College’s A.C. Buehler Library permanently houses the College’s unparalleled collection of Chicago Imagist and Abstractionist Art.

  9. Stanger Young Artists Audition

    The Kiwanis Club of Elmhurst and the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra will conduct the annual Robert Stanger Young Artists Concerto Audition for area high school instrumentalists. You may come and go throughout the day to hear outstanding young musicians perform before a panel of judges; the winner of the Audition will play a concerto movement with the Elmhurst Symphony during its 2018-19 season. Three runners-up will perform for local groups. All winners receive cash awards.

  11. Exhibition Tour with Donna Seaman

    Donna Seaman, the author of Identity Unknown: Rediscovering Seven American Women Artists, will give an exhibition tour focusing on Gertrude Abercrombie’s biography. The painter Abercrombie surrounded herself with fascinating people including jazz musicians like Dizzy Gillespie, held regular jam sessions at her home, and was referred to as "the queen of the bohemian artists." After the tour, Seaman will be available to sign copies of her book.

  15. Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture by Rev. Dr. L. Bernard Jakes

    As senior pastor and teacher of the faith family of West Point Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, the Rev. Dr. L. Bernard Jakes serves as a consultant to policymakers on statewide issues such as sensible gun laws, same-gender marriage and education funding reform. On Feb. 21, Rev. Jakes, an Elmhurst College alumnus (Class of 1997), will present 'Is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 20th Century Voice Relevant in the 21st Century?' as this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Intercultural Lecture at Elmhurst College. In his 15 years at West Point Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Jakes has brought a number of restorative programs to his congregation, including the Operation H.O.P.E. Food and Clothing Pantry and the West Point Community Development Corporation. The nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show recently honored him with its Biggest Giver Award for community excellence.

He also serves as Co-Chaplain for African American students at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois.
