Memories Matter: Senior Recollections

Using images and hands on artifacts, this series of programming aims to encourage Seniors to reminisce about their life experiences and share their stories. Originally conceived at the McLean County Museum of History under the name Senior Reminiscence, this series of programs is especially valuable to individuals facing memory challenges. Programs are 30-45 minutes in length.

Photo Reminiscence

Using oversized photographs from Elmhurst History Museum’s extensive collection, participants are encouraged to share their memories through group discussion and storytelling. Programs can be general or based off available themes including Childhood, Holidays and Work & Play.

Toys of Yesteryear

Did you know Frank Lloyd Wright’s son invented Lincoln Logs? Take a trip down memory lane as Elmhurst History Museum staff shares popular toys from the 1940s through the 1970s. Learn the back story of some of the most iconic toys of their time and have a chance to be a kid again while playing with the museum’s hands on toy collection.

Hearth and Home

So many of us have memories of the kitchens, workshops and garages of our lives; from helping grandma in the kitchen as a child to home improvement projects in our first homes. This program features a wide array of kitchen objects and household tools from the 19th and 20th century, including a washboard, butter churn, coffee grinder, milk bottle, candlestick phone and much more!

Music, Movies and Memories

Using video and audio clips, this program explores our constantly evolving American culture through the most popular films and music from the 40s through the 70s. Program can be general or organizations can choose a decade to focus their program on based on their audience.
